Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and the Blue Hill YMCA announce the Blue Hill Community Race Series

Release Date: 07/24/2014

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (BHMH) and the Blue Hill YMCA (a department of the Downeast Family YMCA in Ellsworth) are teaming up for the upcoming race season.  The two organizations are partnering together to create the Blue Hill Community Race Series. “By forming the Blue Hill Community Race Series, we aren’t competing for sponsors and financial support.  The response from the community has been extremely positive.  Businesses receive benefits from supporting both races and BHMH and the Blue Hill YMCA are saving costs by designing one volunteer t-shirt, sharing signage, and combining promotional efforts.  It just makes sense to work together…and run together,” explains BHMH community relations manager Kelley Columber.

BHMH will hold its seventh annual Fun Run on Saturday, August 2 and the Blue Hill YMCA will hold its second annual Wilbur’s Run at the Blue Hill Fair on August 30.  Money raised from the events will support wellness and fitness programming at both BHMH and the Blue Hill YMCA. The cost to run both races is $40 while the BHMH Fun Run is $20 and Wilbur’s Run is $25.  Registration for Wilbur’s Run includes a pass to the Blue Hill Fair.

“We are closely working together on both races managing all race director responsibilities, volunteer recruitment, and event logistics,” says Annie Grindal, fitness instructor and manager at the Blue Hill YMCA.  Grindal and co-fitness instructor and manager Joy Bragdon are training community members with a “Couch to 5K” program. "Our participants have been working extremely hard on their Couch to 5K plan.  For some, this will be first their 5K experience and we are extremely proud of them,” explains Bragdon who looks forward to watching them cross the finish line.  “And, that last stretch of the race will be lined with providers and staff from Blue Hill Memorial Hospital cheering on the runners and walkers,” adds Columber.
