Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Welcomes Thomas Bugbee, MD to Island Family Medicine

Release Date: 09/30/2014

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (BHMH) is pleased to welcome Thomas Bugbee, MD to its Island Family Medicine (IFM) practice.  Dr. Bugbee has been practicing in BHMH’s  Emergency Department since 2012.  He returns to family medicine, a role in which he began in 1991 on Tenney Hill in a solo family medicine and OB practice, and later at Blue Hill Family Medicine. Providers and staff are delighted to welcome Dr. Bugbee to Island Family Medicine.

Dr. Bugbee’s vast experience with family medicine, in-patient hospitalist services, and emergency department work will be extremely beneficial to IFM.  Dr. Zelnick, IFM lead physician, shares “no one expects we will ever replace Dr. Huff in our hearts, but we can continue to aspire to provide the compassionate, professional care she exemplified. Dr. Bugbee is a great listener and advocate for his patients.  I hope the community will join me in a warm greeting.”  Dr. Zelnick shares that the providers and staff at Island Family Medicine are proud that Dr. Bugbee is joining them and they look forward to introducing him to the community.  “We appreciate all the help BHMH has provided to support our care of the people of Deer Isle and Stonington since Dr. Huff's sudden illness last spring.  In particular, we will greatly miss Fred Watters, FNP who has done a fantastic job of filling the gaps.”

After attending college in Portland, Oregon and the University of California at Davis Medical School, Dr. Bugbee was trained in Family Medicine in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He moved to Maine after an invitation by Blue Hill Memorial Hospital to visit the area with his wife, Carolyn, and “has never looked back.”   He is particularly interested in the fight against colon cancer, alternatives in treatments of diseases such as epilepsy, and alternative forms of illness prevention and treatment such as nutrition, yoga, and exercise (he rides in the American Lung Association’s Trek Across Maine most years). “While I enjoyed my active and useful experience in the Emergency Department, I miss the on-going doctor-patient relationships, from infants to the elderly in an office setting, that are the basis for family medicine,” states Bugbee.

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Family Medicine practices in Blue Hill, Castine, and Stonington provide compassionate, attentive care.  Providers have the ability to refer patients to a variety of specialty care services in Blue Hill.  As a member of EMHS (Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems), BHMH also collaborates with multiple organizations within the system, such as EMMC and Acadia Hospital, to provide seamless specialized care for patients when necessary.

Island Family Medicine is open for appointments Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays 8 am - 4:30 pm and Wednesdays 8 am - 7 pm.  Saturday clinics for existing patients are available at Blue Hill Family Medicine for weekend non-emergency conditions.

Dr. Bugbee is welcoming new patients at Island Family Medicine.  Please call 367-2311 for more information or to make an appointment.
