Suzanne Norgang, a certified nurse midwife (CNM), has returned to Blue Hill Women’s Health Care. Norgang will see patients of all ages, providing both prenatal and well woman care at Blue Hill Women’s Health Care. She hopes to provide midwifery care in Bucksport and Stonington soon.
Norgang will deliver babies at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. An obstetrician, Kathleen Ober, MD and a family practice physician associated with Blue Hill Family Medicine, Stacey Walden, DO, are also providing prenatal care and delivering babies in Ellsworth.
“Maternity care belongs in the community and I am pleased that there are so many good options for woman in this area,” says Norgang. “There are parts of Maine where a woman who has had a cesarean birth is unable to try for a natural birth a second time. There are parts of the state where midwives and other practitioners experienced with water birth are unavailable. Women appreciate these options and I think it is fantastic that we can offer this type of care.”
“I am happy personally and professionally to have Suzanne in Blue Hill again,” says Ober. “Suzanne’s presence is one more indication of our commitment to providing as many options as possible to our patients.”
Norgang has undergraduate and graduate degrees in nursing from the University of Pennsylvania. She has worked in big urban hospitals, small rural practices and birth centers. She is especially interested in helping women to integrate breastfeeding into their lives beyond the immediate postpartum period. “Blending work and motherhood in a way that is healthy for us and our families is a challenge for many moms and something that I work at continually in my own life,” says Norgang. “Midwifery is about supporting women in health through all seasons and times.”
A member of the American College of Nurse Midwives, Norgang has always felt called to midwifery. After growing up in midcoast Maine she left the state for her training and to work but returned to Maine in 2008 to join Robert Walker, MD and Henrietta Clews CNM at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. “Blue Hill has a long history of providing our community with patient centered maternity services and midwifery care. I look forward to continuing this tradition of meeting women where they are and helping them to navigate their pregnancy, birth and health. I love working with Doctor Ober. We complement each other well to bring women a full spectrum of safe and gentle care close to home.”
