What is Urology?
Urology is a surgical specialty which deals with diseases of the male and female urinary tract and the male reproductive organs. Many patients who experience painful, inconvenient, or embarrassing symptoms delay diagnosis and treatment because they are anxious about what their future might hold. About Dr. Rao
S. Ramanadha Rao, MD, is a skilled and highly trained urologist who with expertise in such areas as urologic oncology (cancer), BPH (benign prostate enlargement), urodynamics (bladder disorders), urolithiasis (stone disease), reconstructive surgery, male and female urinary incontinence, male infertility and minimally invasive surgery.
While Dr. Rao is able to treat most patients on his own, he also has an extensive range of professional relationships which he can use to help his patients when necessary.
About Dr. Rao’s Procedures
Dr. Rao is the only urologist north of Portland who utilizes Green Light Laser Therapy in his practice. This technology minimizes recovery time and lessens the likelihood of potential complications from treatment.
Dr. Rao is trained in state-of-the-art robotic surgery for prostate cancer. Robotic surgery is the most technologically advanced and minimally invasive approach to complex surgical procedures available today. As with other minimally invasive procedures, patients who undergo minimally invasive robotic surgery benefit in several ways: their hospital stay is shortened, they experience less pain, lose less blood, have smaller incisions, and can quickly return to their normal activities. Most important of all, studies show that they may have better clinical outcomes.
While many of his patients can receive all of their treatment in Blue Hill, Dr. Rao is the only urologist trained for robotic prostate surgery at Eastern Maine Medical Center (EMMC) and he has performed more than 250 robotic prostate surgeries. Because both Blue Hill Memorial Hospital and EMMC are affiliates of Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, transitions between the two organizations are rapid and seamless.
Practice Information
Dr. Rao’s offices are located in the Specialty Services suite on the first floor of the Sussman Medical Office Building in Blue Hill. Referrals from your primary care provider are required. Appointments are typically available in two weeks, or even less if the need is urgent.
Insurance and Payment Information
We accept assignment on Medicare, Medicaid, managed care and most private insurance. We offer a medical assistance plan to those who qualify. All billing takes place through Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems.
