In an effort to promote healthcare careers to members of our community, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (BHMH) offers diverse educational opportunities to realize their goal.
Dennis Wood, a 26-year old Sedgwick resident, has experienced the benefits of the hospital’s program first hand. As a volunteer, then a part-time employee in the hospital’s pharmacy department, his work at BHMH sparked his interest in pursuing a career in Clinical Pharmacy. “I was drawn to the clinical environment,” he says. “A hospital pharmacy presents new and exciting challenges - every day! I am confident this is what I want – now that I’ve had the experience to know where I’m going.”
Whether its a volunteer opportunity, a one or five-day job shadow, a focused internship for high school students, a college preceptorship (a period of practical experience and supervised training), or a tuition reimbursement program - up to $2500 a year - for its employees, BHMH actively builds career ladders to broaden skills, help people learn something new, and advance a career in the healthcare field.
Kevin Dempsey, Director of Pharmacy at BHMH, has been very supportive of Dennis’s interest. “He likes to learn and I like to mentor, so it’s been a good experience for both of us,” he says. “Dennis is great at multi-tasking - and that’s important,” he adds. “As an ancillary service the pharmacy supports other departments of the hospital, and we are called upon to do a lot of different tasks, and must prioritize and change our work flow all the time. Dennis can do that.”
Andrea McGill O’Rourke, Director of Workforce Development for BHMH says partnering with area schools and colleges to introduce young and older people alike to healthcare is a way to “grow our own workforce,” she says. “We hope area students like Dennis Wood will return home after their schooling is completed to give back to our community.”
