In an effort to be proactive in meeting the highest standards of clinical excellence and patient safety, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital (BHMH) has introduced the use of the Pyxis Anesthesia System, an advanced point of care pre-surgery system which provides greater efficiency and streamlining in the anesthesia medication process. BHMH is the first hospital in the state of Maine to use the Pyxis Anesthesia System.

The Pyxis Anesthesia System digitally tracks all controlled substances and medications for all anesthesia providers, automates verification of patient usage records, documents waste, manages inventory levels, and tracks utilization. "Having the Pyxis in the OR offers us the latest technology in medication delivery," says Paul Schneider, a CRNA (Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist) who administers anesthesia at Blue Hill. "It helps to assure that our patients receive the finest care possible in the region." 

"We now have better management and supervision of controlled substances in the Operating Room," affirms Kevin Dempsey, Director of Pharmacy at BHMH. "Pyxis will allow us to exceed state and federal regulatory agencies' rules and laws by providing information for monitoring potential drug diversion."

For the patient, Pyxis provides a higher level of quality and medication safety because the system will track all medications issued to a patient. It is also equipped with a drug information database, so providers can find information about drug compatibility and drug interactions right in the Operating Room.

"The efficiency and accuracy of this system frees up a lot of time for our staff," says Jim Beaudoin, Surgical Services Manager for the hospital. "They will have more time to provide our patients with the personal, quality care that we are known for."
