Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Explores Options for On-Campus LifeFlight Landing Location

Release Date: 07/21/2015

Blue Hill, ME (July 20, 2015) – Blue Hill Memorial Hospital has begun work to bring a state-of-the art helipad on to its campus for LifeFlight of Maine.  Using its current landing location on the Blue Hill town landing dock, LifeFlight provides critical care air transport to about 20 patients per year.

LifeFlight services are only used at the request of emergency medical services providers or physicians. Since their establishment in 1998, more than 18,000 patients have been safely transported by ground or air, including approximately 350 from BHMH.

Minutes matter when LifeFlight arrives to transport a patient.  Currently, Blue Hill Memorial Hospital providers and staff have to coordinate ambulance transport from the hospital to the Blue Hill town landing, adding increased risk and unnecessary time for patient transport to a trauma center, such as EMMC.  “We greatly appreciate the outstanding relationship the hospital has built with the Peninsula Ambulance Corp (PAC) and accommodations that the town has made over the years allowing LifeFlight to land at the dock,” explains John Ronan, president and CEO of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.  “However, by bringing the helipad on to the campus, transitioning patients from the hospital to the helicopter will be faster and safer, providing the opportunity for our patients to have the best medical care and outcomes possible.”

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital administration recently met with architects and engineers to develop plans for the new location.  Partial funding for the construction of the new helipad will be provided through a grant from the LifeFlight Foundation, in partnership with Maine DOT and funds from the 2012 transportation bond.

This project marks the beginning of several strategic campus improvements to be executed over the next several years to improve patient experience at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.  We look forward to sharing additional information with our neighbors and community as more details develop.
