Smoking Cessation Series

Release Date: 10/15/2014

Island Family Medicine (IFM), a department of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, announces a smoking cessation series of classes to begin on Thursday, October 30.  The classes will be held at IFM from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.  The group will meet for four weeks, ending on Thursday, November 20st, the day of the Great American Smokeout.  All community members are welcome to join.  IFM is collecting $20 to sign up, but that money will be returned after completion of the program.

The classes, designed to help people quit smoking, are based on Daniel F. Seidman, PhD’s book Smoke Free in 30 Days.  Helen Deuschle, LCSW, encourages interested community members to sign up for the class and learn the basics on quitting, how to handle personal triggers, and get NRT (Nicotine Replacement Therapy).  “There are so many benefits to getting support in a group setting,” explains Deuschle.  “We will help you develop the confidence you need to quit.”

Additional goals for the program include: examining physical, social, and emotional dependence on smoking, replacing old destructive habits with new behaviors, and developing a plan for relapse.  Participants making a decision to improve their health will be armed with the tools and guidance to make this as easy and successful as possible.

Community members interested in more information about the program should contact IFM at 367-2311.
