Blue Hill Memorial Hospital Hosts 3rd Annual Women’s Wellness Fair

Release Date: 06/16/2014

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital will hold its third annual  Women’s Wellness Fair at the Bay School in Blue Hill from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 26.  Lead sponsors for the event include Bar Harbor Bank and Trust and The Bay School.  The event is free and open to the public, and will include activities and information for women of all ages.  “We are so very excited to offer this event once again in our community,” says Kelley Columber, community relations manager at the hospital. “While some of our typical health fair activities will be offered, such as blood pressure screenings, diabetes and nutrition assessments, this year, we are bringing new, focused attention to the importance of both colon testing and immunizations. Women of all ages will certainly find a variety of health and wellness-centered exhibitors – offering information, demonstrations, tips, and more.” Columber explains that most all departments and practices of the hospital will be represented, including Blue Hill Women’s Health Care.

In addition to services offered by Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, the fair will highlight other community health resources.  Several local businesses and organizations are participating, such as the At Home Downeast, Beth C. Wright Center, Healthy Acadia, Healthy Peninsula, Coastal Eye Care, Audiology Center of Maine, and the Sleep Center of Maine (a department of Eastern Maine Medical Center).  The Blue Hill YMCA will share information about their programs and provide women with the opportunity to register for both the August 3 BHMH Fun Run and August 30 Blue Hill YMCA Wilbur’s Run at the Blue Hill Fair.  The hospital is pleased to announce that BHMH and the Blue Hill YMCA are collaborating on the Blue Hill Community Race Series this year.

Women who attend the fair will have an opportunity to meet complementary healers and practitioners, such as Acupuncture in Blue Hill, Blue Hill Healing, and Art of Living Well. “We know that we have many women in our area who are committed to exploring modalities such as Reiki, acupuncture, therapeutic touch, SHEN, yoga, Tai Chi, and ayurvedic medicine to complement what is currently offered by our hospital and its practices,” says Kathy Lirakis, RN, quality manager and interim chief nursing officer for Blue Hill Memorial Hospital.  Lirakis notes that the hospital is certainly interested in integrating many of these approaches into its patient care areas, and recently began a volunteer Reiki program for inpatients this past spring.

The June fair, however, is about more than healthcare; it is designed to encourage and inspire women to take care of themselves and each other.  Participants can enjoy mini spa treatments such as skincare consultations, manicures, massages, and make-up lessons.  Several massage therapists along with women from Beauty Counter, I Do, and Mary Kay will help to ensure that participants relax and feel pampered while learning about wellness.  Delicious treats and beverages will also be available throughout the event.
