Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Healthy Acadia and Healthy Peninsula Partner with the Blue Hill Farmers

Release Date: 05/19/2014

Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Healthy Acadia, Healthy Peninsula and the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market are excited to partner together to offer a “Double Your Benefit” Initiative at the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market this summer.

Through this collaborative project, all people who receive SNAP benefits (formerly called food stamps) can shop at the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market and receive 2 dollars worth of SNAP-allowed goods for every 1 dollar of SNAP benefits used.

“It is an exciting and innovative project,” stated Kelley Columber of Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. “The Hospital is dedicated to supporting the health of our community members, and this is one important way we can do so, by increasing access to healthy foods through the local Farmers’ Market.”

When community members shop with SNAP at the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market this summer, they will be matched dollar for dollar by a supporting grant from Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, in order to double the value of their benefits and to be able to purchase more healthy food. The system to accept the Double Your Benefit Initiative is funded by a grant from Healthy Acadia and the Downeast Community Transformation Collaborative, with support from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market, Healthy Acadia, and Healthy Peninsula together are coordinating community outreach and implementation of the initiative.

“We are thrilled to be a part of this collaborative effort to increase access to healthy, local food for people currently facing lower income,” said Bronwyn Clement, Food Security Organizer with Healthy Acadia. “We hope that many community members of all income levels will visit the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market to enjoy the incredible array of healthy goods and to support the local farm economy.”

The Blue Hill Farmers’ Market will run this year from May 24 to October 18. Markets are held on Saturdays, from 9:00am to 11:30am.

“With over 20 farmers and food vendors there's something for everyone: fresh produce, meat, eggs, milk and cheese, bread and other baked goods, and more,” said Amanda Provencher of King Hill Farm, who helps to coordinate the Blue Hill Farmers’ Market. “We are excited that our Market will become even more accessible to community members through the Double Your Benefit Initiative.”
